10 – Summer money saving tips for YOU

The warm weather is finally arriving and summer is right around the corner. If you’re like us, you’re probably thinking of all of the great summer fun that you’re going to have this year.

Now, you know that fun can be expensive, but did you know that it doesn’t have to be?

Here are a ten great tips for having a great summer without spending a lot of money.

Save money on air conditioning

  • Before leaving the house, reduce the temperature in your home by a few degrees. You’ll still be able to come home to a cool and refreshing house, but you’ll save money on your electric bill!
  • Keep your ventilation ducts clean and change the air filter every 2-3 months. This will help your air conditioner run more efficiently, which saves money.

Save money on gardening

  • Buy your gardening materials such as soil, seeds and plants in bulk from a nursery instead of from a grocery chain store. Nurseries typically have lower prices on gardening items – and they often offer a wider selection too!

Save money on groceries

  • Summer is the time to visit farmers’ markets. They take place in various locations in many different cities and are a great place to pick up fresh produce at lower prices. Not only is visiting a farmers’ market a great way to save money, but it’s also a fun way to spend the day!

Save money on vegetables

  • Grow your own fresh vegetables in your backyard or on your balcony. Not only does this help you save money on organic vegetables, but it’s also a lot of fun! Plus, you won’t have to worry about which pesticides or chemicals are being used on your food since you’ll be growing it yourself!

Save money on a day out

  • An outing with your family doesn’t have to break the bank. You can find free events all over the place. For example, the City of Toronto offers many free family events throughout the summer. Check online for upcoming events and visit the ones that sound interesting to you. You’ll be able to have a great time at no cost at all!
  • Did you know that you can often get free tickets to popular attractions from your local library? Passes to museums, galleries and other attractions are often available for free! Ask your local library for more information.

Save money on home renovations

  •  Summer is a great time to renovate. However, renovations can get expensive. Here’s a tips that could help you keep costs down. Need to replace the old shingles on your house or repair your back deck? Look around your neighbourhood to see who else is getting similar work done. You can then take the opportunity to negotiate with the contractor and get a better price on materials, labour or both!

Save money on your next summer party

  •  If you’re throwing a BBQ or any other summer party, consider having a “potluck” where everyone brings a dish. Not only does this help you save money, but you’ll also get to try a lot of great new recipes!

Save money on shopping

  • Look for summer sales! They happen often throughout the summer. Sign up for the email mailing lists of stores that you like in order to receive sale alerts. Depending on the store, you might be able to save 50% or more on some items!
  •  Don’t shop just before a long weekend as prices are usually higher. Shop after and save.

Save money on water

  •  Try using cold water instead of hot water for household chores. It’s just as effective and it keeps costs down.
  • Water your lawn and your plants using a hose nozzle that lets you easily control the flow of water and use a watering can in your garden if possible. Both of these actions save water and money at the same time.

Save money while eating out

  • Try Yelp or other similar apps. These services can give you information about the best places to dine in cheap and often provide details about sales, offers and specials at popular restaurants.
  • Look for coupons on WagJag, Groupon and other similar sites that often provide summer discounts. Doing so can help you save a great deal.
