best-time-to-buy-a-carWhen the weather turns and the snow starts to fly, the last thing you’re probably thinking about doing is heading out to shop for a new car. However, if your vehicle has seen better days, it pays to shop now. Winter is the best time to buy a car.

The best reason: Dealers are often less busy during the winter meaning you have more negotiating power! As mentioned, more people shop in the warmer months when the weather is nice. Sure, there is something to be said for not trudging through the snow, but really, what’s one day in the cold for a much better deal?

There is definitely an off season for car buying, and this translates to deals, especially with certain types of cars. For example, sports cars, convertibles and other cars that are considered summertime vehicles don’t get a lot of interest during the winter, and thus will usually sell for less because fewer people are in the market to buy them. Even family-type cars may sell for better prices in the winter since, as we mentioned, fewer people are out there shopping.

Another great reason is that most lots are filled with new models and dealers are often trying to get rid of any left from the previous year. New models typically arrive in August and September and so dealers will usually discount whatever is left of the previous year’s models.

Additionally, many dealers provide winter tires when you buy in the winter months, often as an added incentive. This can help you save on insurance as most insurance companies offer discounts to those cars equipped with winter tires.

Some tips for buying a new car:

  • Set a maximum price that reflects your budget and what you can realistically afford.
  • Research the dealer and ensure they are reputable.
  • Consider a used car rather than new. New cars depreciate in value the second you drive them off the lot. While used cars used to equal headaches, nowadays technology has evolved to the point that cars last far longer and a used car can often translate to a much better deal.
  • Avoid curbsiders – those unlicensed individuals who sell cars with the goal of making a profit off of vehicles they have generally owned for a very short time.
